| The Orphan Tour (Soldiers Museum) Where footsteps are heard in vacant houses, where candles extinguish with no breeze present, where the coldness of death is felt on warm summer nights. These are the places where GHOSTLY IMAGES are experienced wandering the streets, fields and houses of Gettysburg. This tour tells the spirited stories of taverns and motels on Steinwehr Avenue as well as the National Cemetery Annex. After the 50 minutes walking portion of the tour, you will be invited into the haunted orphanage. After the battle, this building was used to house the orphans of Union soldiers who had died during the war. These youth found a happy home with the first Mistress, Philinda Hummelston. But after her departure, Rosa Carmichael took control. She was known to abuse and even torture the poor children. Some stories would be almost unbelievable if they were not documented. Today, the spirits of those orphans continue to roam inside and outside the old historic building. Hear stories of those who have lived here, visited here, and worked at this haunted site. If you dare, you can even go down the narrow, steep stairs to where orphans were left in the dark, dank area known as the dungeon. This is a 90 minute tour that covers four tenths of a mile, and ends INSIDE a historic haunted building. Please see schedule for dates/times.
