Gift Shop Gems (with recipes!)

As part of our monthly newsletter, we will be featuring new and unique items available at our museums and gift shops. For March, we have three very special books to feature, and two bonus recipes you just have to try!

 

Featured Item at Gettysburg Tours:

Are you looking for a special gift for Mom this mother’s day? At the tour center we are featuring the book A Quiet Town No More. It was written by a local author and it details the events of a news correspondent who becomes caught in the middle of the Battle of Gettysburg. This is a wonderful and thought-provoking read that you and Mom are sure to enjoy.

 

Featured Item at the Jennie Wade House:

If you love desserts, then the Amish Friends Cookbook is perfect for you. It features some of the tasty and delicious Pennsylvania Dutch confections that the Amish have to offer. The recipes are clear and easy to follow. We invite you to stop in the Jennie Wade shop and check out the book for yourself. Below we have featured a dessert for you to try. We hope you enjoy:

Pecan Squares:
Crust
3 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/2 teaspoon salt

Filling
4 eggs
1 & 1/2 cups of light or dark corn syrup
1 & 1/2 cups sugar
3 tablespoons of butter, melted
1 & 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
2 & 1/2 cups chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350. Blend flour, sugar, butter, and salt until mixture forms coarse crumbs. Press into greased 9×13-inch pan. Bake 20 minutes. Meanwhile, combine eggs, corn syrup, sugar, butter, and vanilla. Stir in pecans. Spread filling evenly over hot crust and bake 25 minutes longer or until set. Cool and cut into squares. Store in airtight container. Yields 2 dozen squares.

Here’s one more idea for a unique Mother’s Day gift: a cookbook titled Capital Cooks. This politically-themed collection of recipes is certain to delight Mom, no matter what political party she supports.

As a treat for you, we’ve included a recipe that you can make as a treat for Mom:

Lemonade Pie

6 ounces (1 can) frozen lemonade, thawed

14 ounces (1 can) sweetened condensed milk

4 ounces Cool Whip

1 9″ graham cracker crust

 

Mix thawed lemonade and milk. Fold into Cool Whip. Place in graham cracker crust. Chill. If desired, top with cherry or blueberry pie filling. Enjoy.
